UTTAR PRADESHJogis

The Jogis of Uttar Pradesh are a sect that consists of both Hindus and Muslims who follow the
Jogi tradition. They are syncretic, following both Islam and also Sant Baba Gorakhnath. Jogis
live mainly in villages around Gorakhpur, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Azamgarh and Balrampur
in Eastern UP. The Jogi community in Balrampur was originally patronised by the Royal
family of Balrampur. They would perform at various family functions held by the Royal family
and also at traditional community functions. In the past, they would wear a dhoti with a
Jogiya (saffron) coloured kurta. Now this is only worn while performing. Without the
patronage of the aristocracy, their number is now sharply declining. They also earn a living
by performing at political rallies and community gatherings.

Chunni Lal and party live on the banks of the river Rapti in North-East UP in Balrampur which
was one of the largest Talukdaris of Awadh,. They earn a living by performing at marriages
and other community and political functions. They received this tradition from their ancestors.

The song you hear “Shivji ki Baraat,” is usually sung during wedding ceremonies and also at
community kirtans.
