MEGHALAYAKhasi Folk

The Khasis are a tribe from the Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. The Khasis are distinct
in that they are matrilineal. Both inheritance of property and succession to tribal office is
passed from the mother to the youngest daughter. Their language, Khasi, is a Mon-Khmer
language belonging to the Austroasiatic set of languages. Their main subsistence is
through the cultivation of paddy, which they grow in valleys and terrace gardens on the
hillsides.

Dajied Sing Kharkongar is a young, exceptional multi-folk-instrumentalist living in Shillong.
From a young age, Dajied felt a reverence for Khasi folk music, learning different instruments
and by observing senior folk musicians. In his pursuit of music, Dajied has founded
Da-Thymmei Performing Arts, a collective of Khasi folk musicians from Meghalaya. He
has worked on a plethora of projects including collaborating with other artists, and
performing across the country.

The song you hear “Thawlang Lawbei,” is a song giving thanks to his Ancestors. He acknowledges each surname in the Khasi tribe and gives thanks to their influence on his life as well as countless other Khasi people. In a way it is a tribute to Khasi culture and is performed on different occasions and during home rituals.
