Bihar Bhojpuri Folk

The Nais are an occupational caste of Barbers that can be found all over India and are known
different names in different states. The Nais have historically been known to play important
roles in their communities such as matchmaking.

The performer Sarvanand Thakur belongs to this caste and has carved a path of his own as
a proponent of Bihar’s Bhojpuri music, which is one of the distinctive folk forms
of India. He has been singing since he was a child, listening to his father’s
songs. Belonging to a farming family, he went on to make music his profession,
even performing on radio and television.

The song you hear is a Jhumar, a form that is popular in many states and cultures of India
as a community folk dance. This particular one from Bhojpuri culture is sung during
the baraat or wedding procession to add to the celebrations and enjoyment of the journey.
