Arunachal Pradesh Bari
The Adi tribe is one among the twenty six indigenous tribes
of Arunachal Pradesh. The word Adi means hill man
and this tribe can be found in the Southern Himalayas including China and Tibet.
The Adi live in hill villages in the Siang district, each traditionally keeping to itself,
under a selected chief, the Gam or Gao Burra. The Adis are self-sufficient,
practising subsistence farming in the mountains and hunting.
The performer Tamak Komut is an experienced folk artist originally from Rumgong
village and currently living in the city of Itanagar.
He performs a popular chorus song of the Adi tribe - ‘Bari’.
It is performed during pima or autumn, and Unying-Aaran or New Years Festival,
or housewarming ceremonies. This particular Bari is called “Yiying Barbi Bari,”
one of the three types of Bari and is given the name of an insect which appears
on Earth in autumn and disappears with the advent of Spring and is considered
to be the messenger of the winter season. The Yiying singing is so effective that it is believed that the animals of water, earth and the underground are all awakened and informed of the onset of winter.
There are many rhythmic and melodic instruments used by Adi tribes,
just a few of which are Ere Taapung and Amkong Taapung. In the Bari style,
three instruments namely Kring, Yoksa and Arem are used.
